On the plains of the Vosges you will also find every opportunity to escape from the routine, as a huge variety of sporting and leisure activities is available, from which you can choose according to your desires and abilities, to enjoy the bracing and fertile natural surroundings.
On the hiking paths, which are way-marked and maintained by the hiking enthusiasts of the Club Vosgien and the Fédération Française de Randonnée Pédestre (French Hiking Federation) everyone will enjoy getting to know the many facets of this immense unspoilt area.
On the GR 7 long-distance footpath, which crosses the Vôge or the GR 714 which goes from Domremy, to Vittel and on a large number of other secondary routes, you will get to know a region full of history and interesting features.

Roman roads, wayside crosses, churches, castles and stately homes, monasteries and other remains will tell their stories to those interested in architecture and old buildings, as they pass through the villages, which in fact are scattered hamlets, and cross quiet streams and rivers, where life is peaceful and restful.

Over this vast area of plateaus and low hills, the mountain bike touring routes attract those who don’t want to overdo the effort, on short, relatively flat loops, which don’t detract from the pleasure of really getting to know the architectural and natural heritage of the area.
A wide range of routes is available for super family outings, either just a little bit demanding or really quite relaxing, on wide forest trails such as the ones around Vittel or a bit off the beaten track close to Bains-les-Bains and Fontenoy-le-Château.

In the far western reaches of the department, following in the footsteps of the Romans or of Joan of Arc, or in the heart of the huge game-filled forests of the Vôge, you can also explore the area on horse-back.

Especially as the Vosges are particularly well equipped in terms of relays and centres for riders and their mounts. These offer a wide range of helpful services (sending on of luggage, looking for suitable routes etc…) besides supplying catering facilities and accommodation, riding lessons, the hire of horses, and organized outings on horse-back taking a few hours or several days,
with a guide or without one.
There are many places in the West of the Vosges where the water of the thermal spa resorts, rivers and lakes is to be enjoyed in the form of thermal cure treatments, fishing, fédération de pêche et de pisciculture des Vosges (Vosges Federation for Fishing and Fish Farming) or water sports.
Unless you prefer to go and hunt the plentiful game in the forest, try out some of the new sports with their new thrills, improve your golf or archery, try your luck in the casinos, or just quietly wander through the leisure parks, exhibitions, museums etc…

If you want to go angling:
You must join an Association de Pêche Agréée de Protection du Milieu Aquatique (AAPPMA) (Approved Fishing and Protection of the Aquatic Environment Association). There are 74 of these in the department, and they all issue annual fishing permits. However, most of them also issue holiday permits, for a month or for a day. Information is available from the Tourist Offices, the Mairies (Town Halls) and from the Fédération de Pêche et de Pisciculture des Vosges. You can also get from them all the information concerning existing reciprocal agreements, the « no-kill » fishing areas, and the fishing schools.
