The Vosges offer an extraordinarily wide range of sports and leisure activities which should meet the needs and desires of everyone. There is something for people of every age, of every level of experience, whatever they are looking for and however much they want to get involved in this bracing and fertile environment.

All along the hiking routes - there are several thousand kilometres of way-marked paths, which are carefully maintained by keen hikers - everyone can explore a protected rural heritage, meet with and talk to a local person on the way, and also admire the different landscapes in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Reserve.

You can be on the alert to hear the belling of a stag or see the capers of the chamois, on the trail of forest animals or medicinal plants, peering into the insect world or marvelling at the beautiful panoramic views of the green valleys. There are endless possibilities for new emotions and new ways of getting away from the daily grind.

For mountain bikers, the Vosges mountains can be explored on a network of perfectly maintained routes, over passes and through forests, along summit ridges and down valleys, routes that are much appreciated by experienced riders who are looking for something demanding.
On the « green routes », on the other hand, the physical effort needed is far less, they are suitable for occasional mountain bikers who like to relax or go out with the family.
Julien Absalon, the French National, European and World Champion of cross country mountain biking, who won a Gold Medal at the Athens Olympic Games in 2004.

And even on horse-back one can have the pleasure of appreciating the fauna and flora of the Vosges, in particular by riding along the eastern part of the « Transvosgienne », within the Ballons des Vosges Nature Reserve. An idyllic environment in which to be united with the natural surroundings, while taking advantage of the quality of the assistance, catering and accommodation for riders and their mounts available from the various horse-riding establishments.

And by the lakes of various sizes and the rivers, where fish are plentiful and water sports are great fun, one can have a quiet day’s fishing, or go in for something more vigorous like sailing or canoeing (see the video), water skiing or diving.

But perhaps you prefer to get up in the air by paraglider, hot air balloon or microlight… or enjoy the thrills of climbing, bungee jumping, summer tobogganing, adventure trails or motor sport…

If you want to go angling:
You must join an Association de Pêche Agréée de Protection du Milieu Aquatique (AAPPMA) (Approved Fishing and Protection of the Aquatic Environment Association). There are 74 of these in the department, and they all issue annual fishing permits. However, most of them also issue holiday permits, for a month or for a day. Information is available from the Tourist Offices, the Mairies (Town Halls) and from the Fédération de Pêche et de Pisciculture des Vosges. You can also get from them all the information concerning existing reciprocal agreements, the « no-kill » fishing areas, and the fishing schools.
