Woods and Forests

The forest, an undeniable asset for tourism, covers nearly half the area of the department, and puts it amongst the leaders of the forestry departments in France (with respect to the area covered by woodlands and the production of wood).

With balanced proportions of conifers and deciduous trees, the Vosges forest is an ideal place for leisure activities and a real economic resource for the department.

You can learn more about the forest during old-fashioned demonstrations of wood sledging, woodcutting and skidding …. and during the numerous outings offered by the Vosges tourist organizations.

Amongst the more unusual things to see: the sledging of wood, which now is only done during festive occasions and which is undoubtedly the most faithful witness of the age-old forestry activities.
It’s just like the scenes from the famous film "Les grandes gueules", with Bourvil and Lino Ventura: this risky activity consists in bringing down about a metric ton of cut wood on the load platform of a sledge called a "schlitte" ,which runs on a roadway of logs cut into the mountainside. An impressive scene for the general public, which usually takes place during the summer.

In the Tignécourt forest, which was bought in 1997 by the Vosges Departmental Council the orientation is more towards teaching about the fauna and the flora.

A real "forest school" equipped with a considerable number of observation posts from which one can admire the cervidae (animals of the deer family) and wild boar that live here.

Hunters, anglers and other nature lovers are also welcomed here for "all-inclusive" holidays on the themes of hunting, fishing and the natural environment...

The "Route du Bois", is an invitation to the most inquisitive to get an in-depth look at the wood industry. It is spread over all the Vosges Mountains and makes you aware of a huge potential based on five main themes: the sites and landscapes, the heritage, the businesses, training and achievements.

The Tignécourt departmental forest

Bought by the Vosges departmental Council, the superb Tignécourt forest, spread over 204 hectares in the west of the Vosges, is an ideal place to learn about the forest, and its flora and fauna.

Accessible on request, this protected forest where brockets, roes and wild boar and their young may be seen, has had wide tracks made through it, plus fifteen observation points from which the animals can be observed, including a raised observation hide with room for 25 people.

The Tignécourt forest (hunting rights over 470 hectares by renting from private estates and village-owned forests) is part of the Action Programme for Hunting, Fishing and Environmentally-friendly holidays, a national association aimed at setting up and supporting local programmes for the development of tourism with a concern for the protection of the environment, by offering "all-inclusive" holidays on the themes of hunting, fishing and the natural environment...

To round out this exceptional offer, the Department has set up a "nature house", in the former Tignécourt presbytery, where thematic exhibitions are presented (forest, wood, mushrooms...)
