| The forest, an undeniable asset for tourism, covers nearly half the area of the department, and puts it amongst the leaders of the forestry departments in France (with respect to the area covered by woodlands and the production of wood). |
|
With balanced proportions of conifers and deciduous trees, the Vosges forest is an ideal place for leisure activities and a real economic resource for the department. |

| You can learn more about the forest during old-fashioned demonstrations of wood sledging, woodcutting and skidding …. and during the numerous outings offered by the Vosges tourist organizations. |
Amongst the more unusual things to see: the sledging of wood, which now is only done during festive occasions and which is undoubtedly the most faithful witness of the age-old forestry activities.
It’s just like the scenes from the famous film "Les grandes gueules", with Bourvil and Lino Ventura: this risky activity consists in bringing down about a metric ton of cut wood on the load platform of a sledge called a "schlitte" ,which runs on a roadway of logs cut into the mountainside. An impressive scene for the general public, which usually takes place during the summer.

It is spread over all the Vosges Mountains and makes you aware of a huge potential based on five main themes: the sites and landscapes, the heritage, the businesses, training and achievements.
