Fauna

What a wealth of creatures! In the air, on the ground and even in the water, on the plains or on the summit ridges, the Vosges fauna is very varied.

In the forest, walking along a path, in the middle of the fields or on steep mountain slopes, your walk can give you the opportunity for unforgettable meetings in this special natural area called the Vosges, with its mammals, fish, birds and insects…

A source of inextinguishable enchantment, the local fauna can most easily be seen in the green forests where game is abundant and where it is easy to see majestic rutting stags, whose belling in September is inimitable, hinds, brockets, roes or wild boar.

In this marvellous natural backdrop you also need to listen out for the birds and their melodious songs: the blue tit, the robin and the green woodpecker are easier to spot than the capercaillie, that mythical bird which has become very rare and his now the object of an extensive protection programme.

Perched on the fence-post of a field, gazing at the horizon, buzzards and peregrine falcons take absolutely no notice of the cars that go past, whilst other birds of prey, such as the long-eared owl or the tawny owl, take great delight in scaring walkers who are a bit late getting out of the forest.

Some reintroductions of species have made the observation of animals even more interesting, even if the agile chamois, who is quite happy to get close to footpaths, is much easier to spot than the lynx whose discreet presence still causes unmerited anxiety on the part of human beings.

And just about everywhere in the department, it’s not unusual to see the fluffy red tail of a squirrel, the rush and tear of a vole, the relentless energy of a beaver, the piercing stare of a fox, or badgers, martens, bats or herons about their business…

News flash about...

The west side of the Vosges
Between the alluvial valleys and the age-old forests, the Vosges plain features natural environments which are well worth exploring.
For example, the grassy limestone expanses in Rollainville and Circourt-sur-Mouzon with their unexpected flora and fauna, such as the praying mantis and rare, protected orchids ( phone: +33 (0)03 29 94 10 95).

Another thing worth seeing, on the banks of the Moselle is the habitat of the beavers, which were reintroduced a few years ago (phone: +33 (0)3 29 38 17 09).
