Health - Thermal spa cures
No, the healing powers of the Vosges spring waters are not a recent discovery! The Romans, so many years ago, had already built places with a good reputation for getting fit around them.
Following in the footsteps of these precursors of today’s thermal spas, the Vosges are becoming equipped to supply an ever-widening range of beneficial treatments in the spa centres, which have the best possible technical equipment.

In Bains-les-Bains, which blossoms out between the plains and the mountains, the water gushes out from eleven thermal sources which are recommended for the treatment of heart disease and rheumatism. With a temperature varying between 30 and 53°C, the spring water flows into the Roman Bath, which looks very old and was built in 1845* and the Bain de la Promenade (Promenade Bath) built in the 1930s style, which is on three floors at the heart of the thermal cure centre. * on a site which had already been used by the Romans.

The vocation to be a thermal spa for Contrexéville started in the 18e century, as Stanislas Leszczynski, Duke of Lorraine’s doctor announced that its waters, with high calcium magnesium contents, were excellent for their diuretic properties. The thermal spa, built in a Belle Époque style (Edwardian, more-or-less) and situated in the middle of magnificent grounds, has the latest state-of-the art equipment.

In Plombières-les-Bains it’s the temperature of the hot water (which can exceed 80°C) rising from granite strata that is the main feature of this resort whose architecture is remarkable. With a significant content of rare gasses and trace elements and more specifically fluorine, it is still harnessed and transported by methods similar to those used by the Romans.

The remains that have been discovered make it possible to confirm that the Celts already knew of the Vittel springs and the beneficial effects of its waters which contain sulphates, bicarbonates, calcium and magnesium. The Romans had even built a thermal spa to which the Emperor Vitelius came to try to fight off the effects of gout and “gravel” (small kidney and bladder stones). Forgotten for a long time, the resort was re-opened 150 years ago, when the Géromoy Spring was discovered at a time when "taking the waters" once again became fashionable.
